With all that said, I’m about to start using this again. I won’t be including download links like I used to. I will just provide links to listen to and/or buy records. I miss writing for this, so if you get bummed about me not including download links anymore, sucks for you. Besides, you all should be using Rdio. It’s $9 a month, you can stream it on your smart phone, download things to your phone from it and it’s better than the evil empire ran Spotify.

So guys, summer is almost here. Crank up the jamz, throw back the beers, turn the frowns upside down, put on the shorts, pull down the brims of your hats and let’s have fun. This could be your last summer.

yeahmorebukowski:

Well damn. Black Kites has not even been completely laid to rest but already a new project has animated itself with a third of it’s body. That appendage is Tom Schlatter who offers bass and vocals to this new New Jersey aggressive screamo quartet. Joining him are Rob Ross, Chris Flynn, and probably most notably is The Saddest Landscape’s guitarist, Eric Mauro.

<a href=”http://capacitiesnj.bandcamp.com/album/preliminary-recording” data-mce-href=”http://capacitiesnj.bandcamp.com/album/preliminary-recording”>Preliminary Recording by capacities</a>

As the title suggest, these are but demos yet a lot of dynamite is packed into this very small keg. Capacities shows some pretty strong resemblances to it’s parents TSL and Black Kites. The four songs offered up do not even clock in at a full four minutes so there is not a whole lot I can say before the time runs out. If you needed any other comparisons, just take a look at their impressive lineage, boasting members from Less Life, Birth Screams, The Assistant, This Ship Will Sink, In First Person, You and I and supposedly more. Why you should be stoked? This demo consists of only four of the twelve songs they recorded earlier this month, hopefully it will not take much longer to hear the full release.

Mauro, you are notable. Listen to this yall.

Still too lazy to make a post so here’s a reblog. You should REALLY listen to this. There are only 4 songs to download for now, but trust me the others rule just as much.

travels-:

I’m lost in celestial rings, hanging on to the threads of your bedspread. Woke up with you in mind. Verges of sanity, consumed entirely, by broken mosaics, fragmented questions. “Why are you here?”/”Why are you leaving?”
Woke up with you in mind

I haven’t posted on here in awhile, but maybe that’s because I haven’t heard anything as awesome as “Righteous, Ragged Songs” in a long time. Lee Bains is the former guitarist of Tuscaloosa, AL legends The Dexateens. When The ‘Teens semi called it quits awhile back, Bains started making his own music and from the sound of this song is doing a damn good job of it. Check it out if you think that Southern Fried Country Rock that name checks Fugazi and Fear sounds appealing. The full album, There Is A Bomb In Gilead, drops in April from Alive Natural Sounds.

You can click this link to stream and/or download the first single off this highly anticipated record. This song doesn’t stray far from Torche’s signature sound and that’s A-OK with me. Prepare for yourself for crushingly heavy yet catchy and pop inspired riffs, hooks and harmonies. This was before Myspace had music and when Facebook was still just a social networking tool for the nation’s major universities. Last.fm didn’t exist yet and people still had geocities built websites. Mp3.com was how I discovered music in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. You could search by genre, state, city, etc. much like you can on any website now, but at the time it blew my mind.

In 2002, the year before I left for Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green Kentucky, I researched bands from the area I’d soon be living in and stumbled across Foxhole. When I found out a band that sounded like this was from the town where I was going to school, I was BEYOND stoked. Foxhole plays their brand of trumpet-heavy post rock, but don’t let the over saturated words “post rock” scare you. This isn’t another Explosions in the Sky rip off band.

Foxhole take sounds of early Anathallo, From Monument to Masses, Unwed Sailor and Saxon Shore and roll it all up into a nice, unique tightly knit package. Crashing drums, sudden rhythm changes, slow build ups, and of course the trumpet make this a familiar yet refreshing listening experience. I found this cd while packing boxes this week and remembered my multi-year love affair with the four tracks on it and was worried that upon listening the songs and recording that the EP would show it’s age, but it doesn’t.

Foxhole is still reclusively and methodically making music having released two EP’s and a full length since. After a long hibernation period, I believe they have finished recording a new full length. As I look forward to the new full length I will re-fall in love with this band and you should too.

-Kyle

tonyclarkmusic:

Samson - Provincial (2012)

Buy | Stream | Download

You guys remember last year, when Lemuria released “Pebble” like the second week of the year and still, at the end of the year, it was still on a ton of people’s best of 2011 lists? Well it’s happening again this year. The Saddest Landscape already leaked and will be on a lot of people’s best of 2012 list and it isn’t alone in early great releases. One of my favorite bands of al time, The Weakerthans frontman John K Samson has released this incredible, heartfelt and beautiful album and has yet again confirmed the fact that he is one of the greatest living songwriters of our time and all time.

“Provinical” marks Samson’s first “formal” LP and first release since his third 7 inch “Provincial Road 222.” If you are familiar with his 7 inches then some of these songs will be familiar. They haven’t been merely re-recorded but completely re-written and re-imagined. Those songs bundled with some new songs make this one of the most refreshing new records I’ve heard in a long time. This record is chock full of Samson’s poem like lyrics delicately laid across some songs that are incredibly and undeniably foot tapping pop songs and other songs that are slow, somber and utterly heartbreakingly beautiful.

My favorite thing about John K Samson’s music (and even the Weakerthans music) is how unbelievably personal it is. When he writes about an experience back home in Winnipeg you feel almost as if you were part of it. He has a way of drawing in like you are listening to an old friend retell a story that you love hearing. I have found myself often closing my eyes to this record and can perfectly, without any cloudiness, see exactly what Samson wants me to see. That is a feat that music has a hard time reaching anymore.

Don’t be a turkey and sleep on this record. Go preorder this right now and while your picking this up also pick up Samson’s book of poetry that is being released alongside this flawless LP. He deserves your attention, money and so so much more.

-Kyle

Tony Clark - As Dark As a Moonless Night

It’s almost as if Prawn and Owen had a baby together (definitely noticeable in the first track). Prawn came to Jacksonville upon request and were some of the nicest dudes.
Genre: 80s goth post-punk/rock

This is most likely going to be an automatic love or hate. I know this is a little off from our usual, genre wise, but I’ve really been enjoying a few goth post-punk/80s new wave/synth-pop bands lately. Don’t diss the term “gothic”, I’m sure plenty of you are into New Order, Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Cure and The Smiths. Southern Death Cult is an English goth rock band from the 80s. From what I understand this band formed from members of Violation, then after this album the vocalist formed the band Death Cult (which isn’t as impressive as Southern Death Cult) and then finally The Cult.

Give it a try.

Genre: Indie Pop/Rock

This is a little something to go along with the female vocalist theme we’ve had lately. I feel like I’ve posted about this band before, but I can’t find anything in the archive. Reverie Sound Revue is an indie pop band from Canada fronted by Lisa Lobsinger, who was also a stand in member of Broken Social Scene. Although I never got into that band, I have enjoyed RSR more than the BSS songs I have heard. The band apparently separated after their ep in 2002, Lisa toured with BSS, and in 2005 they began the full length that didn’t release until 2009.

Lisa has extremely dreamy and beautiful soft vocals that pair well with both the upbeat poppy tracks like “We Are The Opposite of Theives” and the more delicate numbers like “Off Rooftops”. It’s simply a catchy pop album. I think vocally, this album combines well with anything Katherine King has released (Kaki King). The only other material they have released was an ep previous to this album, which you can grab here. Enjoy.

Genre : Noise/post punk

FFO: The Jesus Lizard

Saw this band back in 2010 (I think) and picked up this lp from Primal Vomit Records/Distro last night.

“GRIDS from North Carolina play ultra-distorted, grimy, feedback drenched noise punk with crushing repetitive precision. This new LP delivers their heaviest and most damaged material to date. Comparisons could be drawn to bands like Cherubs, Pissed Jeans, Mannequin or even a punker, noisier version of Failure at times.”

FFO: I Hate Myself, Off Minor, Portraits of Past

I picked up this record yesterday at Park Ave in Orlando. It’s an awesome record that I originally assumed was underplayed. Twelve Hour Turn is from Jacksonville/Middleburg, FL (home) and was on No Idea records (Gainesville,FL). Their split with I Hate Myself is perfect and it only makes sense for it to be so popular. It just seems as if I Hate Myself gets far more attention than THT. Not complaining because I love IHM, but THT needs some hype too. I was informed I was late/bandwagoning, that Twelve Hour Turn has merch in Hot Topic and have been played on both radio and TV. Cool to know and definitely surprising, but “late passes” are counterproductive to music culture.

I remember seeing this record on a lot of best of lists last year but never checked it out until just this past week. A friend had noticed I’d been listening to a lot of female fronted music and he suggested I listen to Basia Bulat if I hadn’t and I’m glad he did.

Basia Bulat hails from Etobicoke, Canada who grew up raised by a music teaching mother and listened to only oldies radio stations for the majority of her childhood. While her music is heavy on the folk and often features a harpsichord, the influence of oldies is prevalent in her music. Everything from doo-wop, to original Motown R&B, to classic and true country and folk music not unfamiliar with being compared to that of old Irish or Celtic songs. There are upbeat songs on this record, sweeping and mellow folk ballads and completely crushing masterpieces like “The Shore,” and all songs are intimately blanketed with the beautiful croon of Bulat’s voice. She is simply crafting some of the most beautiful music out there right now.

I know to some this record is old news, but if you are just finding out about it like I am please check out all her stuff. With just two full lengths under her belt, I’m very excited about the future of Basia Bulat.

-Kyle

Signals Midwest - Latitudes and Longitudes (2011)

Tiny Engines | Download

This is the second overlooked record of mine of the year, and before I talk about it, I want to talk about Tiny Engines. I think Tiny Engines is one of the best labels out there right now. They are small, they haven’t put out a bad record yet and the care and love they put into everything from the quality of their vinyl, to the artwork all the way down to how they treat people is something not found often. It get’s me excited on music and awesome people. Please, please if you can buy this record and every record they put out. The artwork is to die for and the vinyl records I do have are some of the best looking and best sounding in my collection.

With that said, have you ever wanted Marc Paffi of Bear Vs Shark to start a band that sounded like Small Brown Bike and released a record in the early 2000’s on Vagrant or Equal Vision? Oh you have?! Me too, and that’s why I’m so stoked on this record. I romantize about different times of my long 27 years of life a lot, and one of those times is the music scene in the early 2000’s. You had a huge variety of music all sharing one scene. Hardcore bands, indie rock bands, post rock bands and all the ones in between. Today, you have to be a dark grungy hardcore band, a drunken anthem filled punk rock/Hot Water Music rip off band or a noodle ridden watered down midwestern rip off band. There is no sharing and intertwining of the genres or influence.

This is why I love Signals Midwest more than most bands right now. There are hardcore parts, there are straight up punk rock parts and there are fuzzed out post rock parts and they all blend them together seamlessly into a record styled that isn’t heard much more. I will admit, I overlooked this band at first because I wrote them off as another Make Do and Mend/Hot Water Music, but I will say that his band is miles ahead of any new bands out there right now. The most recent record this can be compared to, in my opinion, is My Heart to Joy’s “Seasons in Verse,” but this record is light years better on its craftsmanship. The hooks are sharper, the vocals are harsher and more hard hitting, the guitar work is technical yet melodic and it all together forms a glue that if handled properly can be one of those records that holds all the different scenes/genres together for a seamless piece of history in the world underground music. Please pick this record up. Please BUY this record.

-Kyle

Gillian Welch - The Harrow and the Harvest (2011)

Download | Buy

I’m going to post a couple of releases I slept on this year that should have been on my best of list, and this is one of them. I’ve been listening to a lot of female fronted folk/bluegrass lately and when it comes to that style/brand of tunes you need look no further than THE Gillian Welch.

in the genre of folk, or singer songwriter, most artists will write one masterpiece. They will write two, if they are lucky, before fans begin claiming they like their early sound more or their new sound more then they start churning out one mediocre dump after another. Ms. Welch isn’t like those artist. Since her first record, “Revival” was released in 1996, Welch has slowly and meticulously released one timeless masterpiece after another.

Timeless is the keyword in Welch’s work. While the recordings all sound great and are recorded and mastered to the highest standards, if you heard these records today or fifty years from now they will still make you feel the same. In the past couple of weeks of re-listening to this record, I found myself excited to get off work or leave wherever I was to get in the car and listen to this record. It reminded me of my childhood in Indiana, Kentucky and North Alabama.

Honest lyrics, hard work ethic and a beautiful voice. It’s all you need to make good, tried and true bluegrass/folk. If you are a fan of this genre and haven’t checked out this record, please do. You won’t be disappointed.

-Kyle

One more thing that can’t go without being mentioned about this record is John Dyer Baizley’s amazing cover art.
